Calculate the security system’s stated costs
Use one horizon for hardware, installation and recurring services, while keeping unpriced future costs explicit.

Choose what the total is intended to include
A useful security-device cost plan states its horizon and categories before adding numbers. Separate equipment, installation and recurring service charges. Include applicable tax in your own entered quote where relevant, and keep later unpriced expenses visible. The result should describe a chosen scope, not claim to predict every repair, subscription change or replacement that might occur over the product’s life.
Save the actual bundle contents and service tier alongside the calculation. A single doorbell, several cameras and an alarm package can have different dependencies. Comparing their hardware prices alone does not show the cost of obtaining the features you intend to use. The archived doorbell photograph illustrates a physical purchase, not a current retail offer or an included subscription.

Finish the example without hiding the assumptions
Assume hypothetical equipment costing £250, installation costing £80, a £5 monthly service and a 3-year horizon. The service allowance is £5 multiplied by 12 months and 3 years, or £180. Adding £250, £80 and £180 gives a £510 stated-input total. All of these amounts are invented planning inputs, not observed prices, a forecast or an endorsement.
Our ownership-allowance calculator performs this arithmetic on your entries. A service billed annually needs to be represented consistently; do not compare an annual total with another product’s monthly figure as though they were the same unit. If a promotional period applies to a real offer, keep its duration and later charge separate rather than extending the promotion through the whole ownership horizon.
Read the feature scope behind the charge
Identify which devices and features the chosen service covers. Recording access, storage duration or notification features may have their own documented conditions. TP-Link’s UK C120 page, for example, presents local and optional cloud storage as distinct options. That example does not establish that every camera offers the same choices or that every plan has the same scope.
A local-storage setup can also have equipment or accessory costs, so avoid treating the absence of one monthly charge as proof of cost-free ownership. The external reader photo illustrates that media and reading equipment are separate objects. It is not evidence that the pictured reader or a particular card is compatible with your candidate camera.

Keep support and replacement questions beside the arithmetic
A planning horizon is not a hardware-lifetime prediction. Preserve software-support information for the exact device and date checked. Ring’s UK update table is an example of a source that distinguishes model-specific commitments from a general product family. A support date does not guarantee that no repair or replacement will be needed before then, and our cost formula does not estimate that probability.
Replacement supplies also require exact identification. The battery photograph shows two different forms to make that distinction visible; it is not advice to substitute one for the other. Keep any future battery, mount or storage allowance explicitly provisional until the applicable product information and your usage assumptions are known.

Use the total to compare plausible candidates
Resolve task fit, physical requirements and recording choices before allowing the smallest number to decide the purchase. A low subtotal cannot make an unsuitable door lock fit or establish that a camera view is appropriate. Cost is one part of a documented decision, alongside the work the owner must continue to perform. Avoid inventing a monetary value for guaranteed safety or protection.
Save the input values, quote date and feature scope so another person can reproduce the calculation. Mark repairs, energy, inflation or resale as excluded if they are not entered. A transparent partial total is more useful than an apparently complete amount with hidden zeros. Update it when the actual bundle, service tier or household requirement changes.
